Dr. Mariëlle Wijermars is a postdoctoral researcher at the Aleksanteri Institute of the University of Helsinki. She is associated with the Russian Media Lab, where she conducts interdisciplinary research into the current state of online freedom of speech in Russia. Her research aims to gain a better understanding of the evolving legal, technological, economic and societal mechanisms of exerting state control over the Internet in Russia – and their limitations – engaging actively with broader questions concerning Internet governance and surveillance, new media and political protest, and contemporary practices of propaganda and censorship. Mariëlle holds a PhD from the University of Groningen (2016) and previously held the position of Lecturer in East European Studies at the University of Amsterdam.
